The Truth About Fertility Nutrition Support (That Clients Wish They Knew Sooner)

Here’s what my fertility clients say they wish they’d known before starting nutrition support – and how this knowledge can set you up for success from the start.
If you’re trying to conceive, you’ve probably spent hours Googling what to eat, which supplements to take and whether your morning coffee is ruining your chances of getting pregnant. You might feel overwhelmed by conflicting advice, unsure if you’re “doing it right,” or wondering why things aren’t working despite your best efforts.
You’re not alone.
Many of my clients arrive at their first appointment feeling frustrated, anxious and exhausted – and almost all of them say the same thing: “I wish I’d done this sooner.”
Fertility nutrition isn’t just about cutting things out or eating a “perfect” diet. It’s about understanding your body, nourishing it properly and removing some of the guesswork from an already stressful journey. Working with a dietitian can be a powerful turning point but it helps to know what to expect.
In this post, I’m sharing the most common things fertility clients wish they knew before they started nutrition support. If you’re considering seeing a fertility dietitian (or already have an appointment booked), this guide is for you.
The Top Things Fertility Clients Wish They Knew Sooner

You’re Not Failing – You Just Need a Plan
One of the first things I tell new clients is this: You’re not failing. You’ve just never had a clear plan.
By the time most people reach out for fertility support, they’ve already been trying for a while. They’ve often made changes: cutting out sugar, adding a green smoothie, taking a prenatal, but they’re doing it without knowing what actually matters. And when nothing seems to work, it’s easy to start blaming yourself.
But here’s the truth: fertility is complex. Nutrition is just one piece of the puzzle and even within that piece, it’s rarely straightforward. You might be eating all the “right” foods and still not getting the results you hoped for. That doesn’t mean you’re doing it wrong. It means your body might need something more tailored.
What many clients don’t realise is that fertility nutrition isn’t a generic set of rules. It’s a strategic plan, built around your unique cycle, medical history, nutrient needs and timeline.
That’s why working with a dietitian can be so helpful. We look at the big picture and help you connect the dots. You don’t need to do more. You need to do what matters most and that’s what a personalised plan helps you uncover..
Diet Culture Isn’t Fertility Culture
Many of my clients come to me believing they need to “eat clean,” cut out entire food groups, or follow a strict diet to improve their fertility. They’ve been influenced by diet culture messaging, where smaller bodies are praised, carbs are demonised and food is often framed as “good” or “bad.”
But fertility doesn’t care about your macros, your weight-loss goals, or how disciplined your eating habits are.
In fact, some of the most common diet trends can work against your reproductive health. Under-eating, cutting carbs, or avoiding dietary fats can affect ovulation, hormone production and cycle regularity. Your body needs enough energy, consistently, to feel safe to support a pregnancy.
Fertility nutrition isn’t about restriction. It’s about nourishment, balance and making sure you’re meeting your body’s needs, not depriving it in the name of being “healthy.”
If you’ve spent years in and out of diets, it can feel strange to approach food from a place of support instead of control. But that shift is often one of the most powerful steps in improving your fertility and your relationship with food.
The goal isn’t a perfect diet. It’s a body that feels safe, nourished and ready to conceive.

It’s Not About Perfection
One of the biggest misconceptions my fertility clients carry is that they have to “get everything right” for their body to cooperate.
They try to eat perfectly. Take every supplement on schedule. Eliminate anything remotely questionable: sugar, caffeine, alcohol, gluten, dairy, soy, the list goes on. And then they come to their appointment worried they’ve “messed it all up” because they had pizza on the weekend or forgot to take their prenatal one day.
Let me reassure you: fertility is not all-or-nothing.
Your body doesn’t need perfection, it needs consistency, adequate nourishment and a sense of safety. What matters most is your overall pattern of eating and living, not the occasional food choice or missed supplement.
In fact, chasing perfection often leads to stress, guilt and burnout. And stress can be just as disruptive to fertility as poor nutrition. Many clients are surprised to learn that a flexible, realistic approach gets better results than a rigid one.
In my practice, we work on building sustainable habits that support your health long-term, not just for conception, but also for pregnancy, postpartum and beyond. So if you’ve been stuck in “fertility food perfectionism,” take a breath. You’re doing better than you think.
Supplements Aren’t One-Size-Fits-All
If you’ve ever walked into a pharmacy or searched online for fertility supplements, you’ll know how overwhelming it can be. Prenatal vitamins, CoQ10, myo-inositol, vitamin D, omega-3s, iron, zinc, the list is endless. And it’s tempting to just buy a few and hope for the best.
But here’s the problem: not every supplement is right for every body.
Some women need additional support with certain nutrients due to medical conditions, blood test results, or dietary intake. Others are unknowingly taking high doses of nutrients they don’t need, which can sometimes do more harm than good. For example, iron can be incredibly helpful for some but if taken unnecessarily, can lead to iron overload resulting in various health problems.
There’s also the issue of quality. Not all supplements are created equal and some popular brands contain low-quality forms of nutrients that your body can’t absorb well.
That’s why supplement plans need to be individualised. When I work with clients, I base my recommendations on their health history, blood work, dietary patterns and fertility goals, not what’s trending on social media.
The right supplement strategy can absolutely support fertility. But it should be tailored, evidence-based and part of a bigger picture, not a DIY guessing game.
There’s More to It Than Just Food
While nutrition plays a powerful role in fertility, it’s just one piece of the puzzle. What we eat matters, but so does how we live.
Many of my clients are surprised to learn that factors like stress, sleep, movement and environmental exposures can all influence hormone balance, egg quality, ovulation and implantation. And for male partners, these same factors affect sperm quality, too.
For example:
- Chronic stress can disrupt the brain’s communication with the reproductive system, impacting ovulation and menstrual regularity.
- Poor sleep affects insulin sensitivity and appetite-regulating hormones, which in turn can impact fertility-related conditions like PCOS.
- Lack of movement – or over-exercising, can influence hormone levels, cycle regularity and energy availability for reproduction.
This doesn’t mean you need a perfect sleep schedule or a meditation habit to conceive. But it does mean that taking a whole-person approach, one that considers your lifestyle, mindset and environment alongside your nutrition, can make a meaningful difference.
In my work, I often collaborate with clients to build small, realistic lifestyle changes that complement their nutrition goals. Whether that’s winding down before bed, scheduling enjoyable movement or finding ways to manage stress, these pieces all contribute to a healthier, more receptive body.
The Sooner You Start, the Better
One of the most common things I hear from clients is: “I wish I’d done this earlier.”
It’s easy to delay seeking nutrition support. Many couples spend months, or even years, trying to conceive before asking for help. Others wait until they’re about to start IVF or are already midway through treatment. And while it’s never too late to make meaningful changes, starting earlier gives your body more time to respond.
Why? Because the development of both eggs and sperm takes time.
- Eggs take around 3 months to mature before ovulation.
- Sperm regenerates every 2–3 months.
That means the food you eat, the nutrients you absorb and the lifestyle choices you make today can influence the quality of your eggs and sperm in the next cycle, not just the current one.
By starting early, we can optimise nutrient stores, address any deficiencies, support hormone optimisation and build sustainable habits that benefit both conception and pregnancy. It also gives us time to work around medical conditions like PCOS, hypothyroidism, or endometriosis, rather than reacting in a rush.
If you’re thinking about trying for a baby in the next 6–12 months, now is the perfect time to begin nourishing your fertility.
What to Expect from a Fertility Nutrition Consult
If you’ve never worked with a dietitian before, it’s completely normal to feel a little unsure about what to expect, especially when it comes to something as personal and emotional as fertility.
Let me reassure you: the goal of a fertility nutrition consult isn’t to judge or overwhelm you, it’s to support you with clarity, compassion and a clear plan.
In your initial appointment, we’ll talk through:
- Your medical and fertility history
- Any conditions like PCOS, thyroid disorders, endometriosis, or hypothalamic amenorrhea
- Your menstrual cycle patterns and symptoms
- Current eating habits, supplement use and lifestyle factors
- Your goals, concerns and timeline for trying to conceive
From there, I build a tailored nutrition and supplement plan that reflects your needs, not a one-size-fits-all checklist. I focus on evidence-based strategies that feel realistic and achievable for your life and I explain the why behind each recommendation so you feel informed and empowered.
You don’t need to show up with a perfect food diary or have everything figured out. This is a space for honest conversations, gentle guidance and science-backed support.
Whether you’re at the beginning of your journey or partway through fertility treatment, nutrition support can make a real difference…and you don’t have to do it alone.
You Don’t Have to Navigate This Alone

If you’ve made it this far, I want to leave you with this: you’re doing better than you think.
Trying to conceive can be an emotional, exhausting and confusing experience, especially when you’re constantly second-guessing your food choices or feeling like you’re missing something. But you don’t have to do this alone and you don’t need to have it all figured out before asking for help.
Most of the clients I see feel uncertain at first. But after just one session, they often feel a sense of relief, not because everything is instantly “fixed,” but because they finally have a clear, personalised plan and someone in their corner who truly understands fertility nutrition.
Whether you’re preparing for pregnancy, have been trying for a while, or are navigating IVF or other treatments, working with a dietitian can help you feel more confident, more supported and more in control of your journey.
